The Kyrgyz government has officially requested South Korea’s Asiana Airlines to launch new direct flight routes to the country, aiming to tap into the growing influx of international travelers drawn to its alpine landscapes and cultural heritage.
Asiana Airlines, a major South Korean carrier connecting Asia, North America, and Europe, confirmed it held talks with Kyrgyz officials about potential service expansion. On April 8, Aida Ismailova, Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan to South Korea, met with Kim Jong-min, Senior Director of External Affairs at Asiana Airlines, to explore possible cooperation.
During the meeting, Ambassador Ismailova proposed seasonal flights to several destinations, including the capital Bishkek, as well as Tamchy, Karakol, and Osh. These routes would target peak tourism seasons and open new travel options between the two countries. Currently, Asiana does not operate any flights to Kyrgyzstan, while Korean Air and T’way Air serve routes between Incheon International Airport and Manas International Airport.
“The unique natural scenery and growing interest from Korean tourists make Kyrgyzstan a promising travel destination,” said Ambassador Ismailova. She asked Asiana to consider expanding its network to include more Kyrgyz cities.
Kim responded positively, stating, “We recognize the beauty of Kyrgyzstan and the strong interest from Korean travelers. We will carefully evaluate the potential for scheduled services, direct flights, and charter operations.”
Kyrgyzstan has seen a surge in tourism, especially to destinations like Tamchy, home to Lake Issyk-Kul-a pristine alpine lake known for its clear waters and surrounding snow-capped mountains. According to South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, air passenger traffic between Korea and Kyrgyzstan reached 43,574 in 2024, a 412.9% jump from 8,496 in 2023, marking the third-highest volume among Central Asian countries after Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
With a population of approximately 7.1 million, Kyrgyzstan is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), alongside Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Armenia. South Korea and Kyrgyzstan established diplomatic ties in 1992 and celebrate their 33rd anniversary of relations this year.
